Shannon started skating at age 5 on a creek near her Whitby home. She began her precision skating career at the age of 7 when she joined the Whitby Figure Skating Club. Over the next 12 years, Shannon skated at the Pre-Novice, Novice, Junior, and Senior levels. During her final year of competitive skating in 1989, she was a member of the Senior Canadian Champion Ice Fyre team.
