John was born in Oshawa in 1959 and earned his education at Henry Street High School, York University and North Carolina State University.
John was chosen as the MVP of the 1980 Minto Cup series and, in 1981, he was voted Rookie of the Year and League MVP of the Western Senior Lacrosse Association.
In 1984, John was selected to All-World Midfield team at the World Field Lacrosse Games in Los Angeles and was the MVP of both the Brooklin Redmen Mann Cup Champions and the Ontario Senior League in 1985.
From 1981 to 1991, John was a member of the Canadian National Field Lacrosse team.
