Ed Derks was born in Oshawa in 1961 and attended Henry Street High School and the University of Waterloo.
Ed’s playing career in lacrosse consists of 9 years in the Whitby Minor Association (1968-76) and 6 years in Whitby Junior A (1977-82). He is a 2-time Minto Cup Finalist and a Minto Cup Champion in 1980. In his final two years of Junior A, Ed was team Captain.
A knee injury in a pre-season game with the Brooklin Redmen ended his playing career and the beginning of his coaching career.
As a head coach in box lacrosse, his accomplishments include:
- Tyke A Provincial Champions in 2000
- Bantam A Provincial Finalists in 2002
- Midget A Provincial Champions at the 2004 summer games
As a field lacrosse coach, Ed guided his teams to these successes:
- Novice B Provincial Championship in 1997
- Novice A Provincial Finalist in 1998
- Peewee B Provincial Championship in 1999
- Peewee A Provincial Championship in 2000
- Bantam B Provincial Championship in 2001
- Bantam A Provincial Championship in 2002
- Midget A Provincial Finalist in 2004.
Ed also acted as the technical director for Whitby minor lacrosse in 2002-2003.
