Wayne was born in Peterborough in 1946 and started playing minor lacrosse in Peterborough at the age of five. He played under well-known coaches Harry Wipper, Ross Powless, Bob Allan and Don Barrie during his lacrosse career prior to playing for the 1968 Mann Cup Champion Brooklin Redmen.

Wayne has coached hockey and lacrosse for most of his adult life and won a Bantam All-Ontario Championship in 1970.
